The role
Whatever the department needed that week.
I was designing inside the college’s brand rather than my own, so a lot of the job was keeping things consistent. Same green, same tone, same logos, across pieces that would end up next to each other on the same noticeboard.

Featured piece · The mural
Designing something that had to work in the room.
The Center wanted its PEAS values, Persist, Engage, Achieve, Succeed, built into the room instead of printed on a handout. The finished artwork runs about ten feet by nine, and a print vendor produced and installed it.

Scale changes the brief
At that size people see it from across the room before they’re close enough to read anything. So the four values had to be the first thing you notice, then the illustration, and the smaller details only once you’re sitting down.
Spacing mattered more than usual
I worked in proportions rather than pixel sizes, and kept zooming out to check it small. If it still read clearly at thumbnail size, it would read from the doorway. I also set the type weight and letter spacing for distance rather than for a screen.
Getting it ready for print
The file had to leave my computer as something a printer could use: correct dimensions, bleed, colour and resolution at full size. I handled the revisions before anything got printed.

Printing at ten feet
Working inside someone else’s brand made me stricter about consistency than my own projects ever had. A mural is also unforgiving. Once it is printed at ten feet you cannot nudge anything, so I checked that file more carefully than anything I had made for a screen.
